A Statement from our Governor:

Governor Kenny Guinn

"The $300 million rebate represents an historic agreement between the State of Nevada and the citizens of Nevada. With a record-setting budget surplus, the people of Nevada have invested wisely in our state. The $300 million rebate, administered through the Department of Motor Vehicles, ensures that the citizens of Nevada will receive a tangible and historically important dividend from the State of Nevada for their investment."

Governor Guinn and the 2005 Nevada Legislature (Assembly Bill 572) authorized a rebate of $300 million in surplus state tax revenue.

It is excess dollars resulting from a more robust economy than was predicted, not a tax increase.

This is not a rebate of DMV fees. Because Nevada does not have a state income tax, the DMV's database is the only database available that contains most adults in Nevada. The DMV's database is being used to identify Nevadans.

The amount those Nevadans paid the DMV in 2004 in Highway Fund registration fees and Governmental Services Tax is the amount that will be rebated from the General Fund, with a minimum of $75 and a maximum of $275.

Those who were at least 65 years of age on or before Jan. 1, 2005, held a valid identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles on or before that date and continue to hold such valid identification card will receive a rebate of $75.

Checks will be mailed automatically. No action is necessary to receive your rebate if your address is current with the DMV. Please file a Change of Address application if you moved and have not already filed this with the DMV.

Current plans call for checks to be mailed in late September. Watch the local news media for the official announcement or bookmark this page.

The law states that the rebate program must end 180 days after the checks are mailed. You must resolve any issues and cash your checks within this time frame. DMV will have dedicated telephone numbers to call regarding the rebates once the mailing has begun.

We here at Anita's Complete DMV Service hope you will all get a nice refund. These are hard times and money can be tight.

ELIGIBLE VEHICLES

A rebate check will be issued based on the 2004 registration of most Nevada vehicles, including:

-        Passenger cars, trucks and SUVs

-        Motorcycles

-        RVs, travel trailers and fifth-wheel trailers

-        Utility trailers weighing 3,500 pounds or more

-        Most business vehicles. This includes taxis, limousines and fleets but not rental cars or vehicles registered through the Motor Carrier Division.

The following vehicles are not included in the rebate program and no check will be issued:

-        Utility trailers weighing less than 3,500 pounds

-        Any vehicle that was not registered in Nevada in the calendar year 2004

-        Short term lessor (car rental) fleets

-        Vehicles registered through the Motor Carrier Division

-        Any vehicle where the registered owner has bad debt with the DMV

-        Boats (water vessels are registered with the Nevada Division of Wildlife, not DMV)

Owners of eligible vehicles will receive a separate check for each registered vehicle. Current plans call for checks to be mailed in late September.

Bad Debt
Those who have returned checks or other bad debt with the DMV will not receive a rebate. The rebate amount that person would have received will not go to clear up the bad debt. The bad debt is with the Highway Fund and the counties and school districts that receive the governmental services tax. The rebate is coming from the General Fund. These are two separate funds and one cannot be used to pay off the other.

Rebates can be issued to those who have bad debt if the debt is cleared in time. E-mail or call for instructions if you believe you may have bad debt. Include your driver license number.

Those who were at least 65 years of age on or before Jan. 1, 2005, held a valid identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles on or before that date and continue to hold such valid identification card will receive a rebate of $75. The checks will be mailed automatically. No action is necessary to claim your rebate.

Vehicle rebates will be based on the amount of the Basic Registration Fee and the Governmental Services Tax paid in 2004. The minimum is $75. The maximum is $275. If you paid an amount between these limits, your rebate will equal the amount you paid in the Basic Registration Fee and Governmental Services Tax.

The rebate amount will not include the Supplemental Governmental Services Tax charged in Clark, Washoe and Churchill counties. It also will not include Sales Taxes, Specialty Plate Fees, Title Fees or other miscellaneous charges.

The rebate may be less than what you paid to the DMV at the time of registration, particularly if you paid Sales Taxes on a vehicle purchased from a private party. On older vehicles, the rebate may be more than what you paid.
